Planning policy and high retrofit costs are holding providers back from delivering more sustainble homes, says Jonathan Pearson from Residentially
The UK’s twenty nine million homes are said to be some of the least energy-efficient properties in Europe. Only a quarter meet the highest energy standards, according to the Climate Change Committee and central and hot water heating currently contribute to about 14% of all greenhouse gases.
But the pressure to retrofit the UK’s more than four million social housing homes and ensure any new properties fall in line with the government’s 2050 net zero carbon target is placing huge pressures on social landlords amidst ongoing shortages of affordable homes as well as the cost of living crisis.
