Senior MHCLG officials admit department’s data on out-of-area placements needs to improve

Civil servants respond to criticism after numbers of households placed outside of their local area surges to more than 38,000 in recent quarter

Senior civil servants have told MPs the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) is looking to improve data collection to help it understand better and tackle the impact of surging out-of-area placements.

Several officials from MHLCG and the Department for Work and Pensions appeared before MPs yesterday as part of the Public Accounts Committee’s inquiry into tackling homelessness.
