Wavensmere Homes appoints local contractor to build new £150m housing development
Derby-based housebuilder Wavensmere Homes has appointed M Lambe Construction as contractor to begin work on its scheme for 800 homes in the city.
The £150m Nightingale Quarter development is being built on the 18-acre site of the former Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, which was torn down in 2015.
Various proposals have been considered for the site in the past 10 years, including retail offers, a mixed-use scheme featuring an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a 400-homes scheme alongside a superstore, but all these projects failed to materialise.
Instead Derby city council approved Wavensmere’s plan for 800 homes last year. Around 10% of the properties will be affordable.
The site will also feature cycle routes, childrens’ play areas and an open-air gym, together with community facilities in the former hospital’s “pepper-pot” buildings, which are being retained (pictured).
Wavensmere said other historical features on the site would be refurbished and restored, including five existing villas, following consultations with the local authority’s conservation team.
The first homes are expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.
