Joint pilot project with Coventry city council will assess viability of factory-built houses
Whitefriars Housing Association, part of Coventry-based WM Housing, is to trial the use of volumetric modular construction homes in a joint project with Coventry city council.
Two homes – one a two-bedroomed house, the other with three bedrooms – will be built using steel frames by housebuilder Totally Modular at its factory in Cradley Heath, near Dudley.
Once built they will be transported to a site in the Willenhall district of the city, where they will be installed and monitored.
Totally Modular said if the pilot proved successful it could pave the way for more modular homes being built at various locations in and around Coventry.
The manufacturer has the capacity to build 2,000 homes a year at its factory, ranging from detached, semi-detached and terraced houses, as well as micro-living modules and airspace apartments, to “room-in-a-roof” solutions, and said it can complete a new home in 48 hours, from scratch.
The group said its homes are 97% complete when they leave the factory, including pre-installed kitchens, bathrooms and finishes.
