Scheme for 6,000 homes in Hampshire gets nod from planners
Councillors in Fareham this week resolved to grant permission to a proposed 6,000-home new town in countryside near Portsmouth.
The scheme, which developer Buckland Development has been promoting for a decade, is one of 14 government-backed Garden Towns.
The developer said the decision by Fareham’s planning committee left it on course to see the first homes occupied by the end of 2021.
However, according to Buckland, the resolution to grant permission means go-ahead is still subject to negotiation of a Section 106 agreement, the drawing up of a strategic design code, funding for a new motorway junction and submission of a reserved matters application for the first phase.
Welborne is proposed to be built out over the next 20 years on a 1,000-acre site north of Fareham, and includes a new district centre and village centre.
Buckland’s scheme has been drawn up in conjunction with planners David Lock Associates and Barton Willmore and engineers Aecom and WSP, all of whom will continue to work on the scheme.
Buckland Chairman Mark Thistlethwayte said: “This decision is a significant milestone enabling us to continue with our long-term vision and commitment to delivering Welborne.”
