Contractor set to build 201 homes on the Gascoigne estate in east London
Wates has been lined up to build more than 200 homes in Barking, east London, for the local council’s development arm, Be First, after the proposed scheme was given the planning nod last week.
The homes, to be built as part of the first phase of the redevelopment of the west side of the Gascoigne estate, were designed by Swedish architects’ firm White Arkitekter, which is also overseeing the design of the estate’s eastern revamp.
Nearly two thirds (60%) of the new homes will be affordable, with rents starting at £134 a week.
The 201 new homes will consist of 89 one-bedroom, 88 two-bedroom and 24 three-bedroom apartments.
The buildings will range across three to 13-storey blocks, including seven terraced houses.
The new development in Abbey Road will include new children’s play area, electric car charging points and more than 360 new cycling parking spaces.
There will also be a planned 40% reduction in carbon emissions via a connection to the forthcoming Barking Town Centre District Heating Network and solar panels.
The first phase of the redevelopment is due to start on site in January next year, with completion expected in the spring of 2022.
Structural and civil engineer on the scheme is Mason Navarro Pledge and MEP consultant is Aecom.
