Housing firm’s 416-bed scheme forms part of wider partnership with university
Student housing giant Unite has won planning permission for a 416-bed development on the site of the Bristol Royal Infirmary.
The scheme includes the conversion of a grade-II listed former hospital building on Marlborough Street into 62 rented homes. When building work began in 1780, it was one of the first hospitals outside London.
The project forms part of a wider partnership with the University of Bristol covering around 3,000 beds and including a 650-bed development next to the university’s new Temple Quarter campus.
Richard Smith, Unite Students’ chief executive, said the permitted scheme created new supply in a city-centre location where there was a shortage of student accommodation.
“We are delighted to be working towards an exciting partnership with the University of Bristol, which strengthens our long-standing and valuable relationship,” he said.
