A spokesperson said Harris, who has led the 40,000-home association for nearly a decade, is standing down to “spend more time with his family, travelling and pursuing other interests.”

He does not intend to pursue another housing association chief executive position but neither will he be fully retiring from housing.

Harris was formerly chief executive of 14,000-home Raglan Housing Association and played a key role in spearheading the merger with 16,000-home Jephson which created Stonewater in 2015.

Under Harris’ leadership Stonewater has grown its stock by around 10,000 properties over the past decade. Harris is a champion for rural housing, with Stonewater operating in 134 local authority areas in largely rural locations.

Harris will remain in his post for several months to handover to his successor, who will be appointed following an open recruitment process.

Harris said: “I’ve seen a lot of change, mostly good, but there’s still a long way to go to end the housing crisis and achieve Stonewater’s vision of ‘everyone having a place to call home’.

”I hope I’ve played my part and feel it’s the right time to hand on the baton. I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family and indulging in my love of travel.”
