Planning permission already in place as part of British Land’s 3,000-home redevelopment
Southwark council has snapped up a plot of land in British Land’s 3,000-home Canada Water regeneration scheme with plans to build 79 affordable homes.
The plot was purchased from British Land, which will build the homes on behalf of the council with the development’s planning permission already in place.
Located at Roberts Close, a few minutes walk from Canada Water station, the Duggan Morris Architects-designed scheme will consist of 60 homes for council rent and inclulde 39 three-bedroom family homes.
Also on the project team is engineering consultant Sweco, project manager and QS Aecom, transport and infrastructure consultant Arup and planning consultant DP9.
The scheme is part of the council’s New Homes programme, which aims to start or complete 2,500 homes in the borough by 2022 with a wider goal of build 11,000 new council homes by 2042.
The council has partnered with British Land on the Canada Water Masterplan, which was agreed in 2018 to regenerate the Canada Water area and could see around 3,000 homes built in total with a minimum of 35% set to be affordable.
As part of British Land’s masterplan agreement with Southwark, the council has the option to buy all of the affordable housing delivered through the programme.
The Roberts Close scheme is expected to start on site later this year with completion expected by 2023.
