Local firm to convert old Co-op building into student accommodation
An old department store in the centre of Huddersfield is set to be converted into student accommodation in the first act of a £250m council-backed regeneration of the Yorkshire town.
SKA Developments, which is based in Huddersfield, is to begin work in the next few weeks on converting the old Co-op building (pictured) on New Street into a 134-bed scheme.
The council has agreed to lend £10m to SKA Developments to restore the listed building, which was last used as a nightclub venue and has been closed for roughly 20 years.
Part of the job, which has already received planning permission from Kirklees council, includes adding three floors to the existing four-storey building.
The accommodation will comprise a mix of en-suite rooms, clusters of rooms with communal facilities and one or two-bedroom flats across the seven floors.
Zeb Pervaiz, director of SKA Developments said: “This project represents an extremely important chapter in the redevelopment of the town centre and it’s something we’re very excited to be leading.
“Our plans will transform the site into a spectacular development and bring a long-vacant building back into use, helping to create a vibrant town centre. We’re delighted to be playing such an important role in Kirklees council’s wider vision.”
