Work on building the first homes in Notting Hill Genesis’ revamp of the Aylesbury estate in south London has taken a step closer to starting, with the appointment of contractor Hill.

The Essex-based builder will build 229 homes as part of an initial development of homes of a parcel of land known as “Package A”, at the junction of Westmoreland Road and Bradenham Close in Southwark.

The construction contract, worth £70m, will deliver 192 homes for social rent, comprising 84% of the scheme. These will include 54 extra-care units and seven homes for people with learning difficulties.

Package A is part of a larger redevelopment site, which will deliver more than 800 homes.

The 20-year project between Notting Hill Genesis and Southwark council to rebuild homes on the estate will eventually deliver in excess of 3,500 units, half of which will be affordable, while three-quarters of those will be for social rent.

The existing estate (pictured), built between 1963 and 1977, contains 2,704 homes.

Over the years it developed a reputation for being run-down and deprived and has been the setting for a number of TV dramas, including The Bill.
