Developer had been promoting application alongside Sainsburys and A2 Dominion

Plans for a 1,500-home scheme in south London by Mount Anvil, Sainsburys and A2 Dominion have been shelved due to uncertainty over the status of the Bakerloo line extension project.

Lewisham Council said Mount Anvil had withdrawn its planning application for the New Cross Gate Retail Park redevelopment, which had proposed a new Sainsburys store alongside 1,500 homes, 35% of which would have been  affordable.

The proposals included a number of mid-rise blocks alongside two towers rising to 33 storeys, provoking significant local opposition.

The scheme had previously been thrown into uncertainty by Transport for London issuing revised plans for its proposed Bakerloo line extension station.  Mount Anvil had said that this would result in the proposed Sainsburys store having to close.

Lewisham council received formal notification from Mount Anvil of its intention to withdraw its application on February 27. It said that Mount Anvil had told the council that, “due to the increasing uncertainty around the Bakerloo line extension project, which has blighted the site, we have agreed not to pursue the application any further.”

Mount Anvil has been contacted for comment.
