The scheme, on council land in the Hertfordshire new town, also includes plans for 3,500m2 of retail and commercial floorspace, a public square and park, a public services hub and a new primary school.

The planning application is made up of an outline application for the whole 14.5ha £350m redevelopment plan, as well as a detailed application covering the 760-home first phase.

Mace said in a statement that the scheme, dubbed SG1, will transform a significant portion of the town centre, with plans to deliver an increase in biodiversity, a tree-lined boulevard and new parks and ponds.

Kevin Cowin, director at Mace, said the scheme was an “ambitious and carefully crafted proposal” that had been reworked with more public space in response to a consultation on initial plans in 2019.

He said: “We aim to revitalise the town centre by introducing new homes, vibrant activities, community facilities and inviting public spaces.

“Our vision is to deliver a thriving, successful and attractive heart to Stevenage, which will serve the needs of local people and businesses for decades to come.”
