Wigan MP to lead on housing policy
Lisa Nandy has been confirmed as the new shadow secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities.
The Wigan MP will shadow Michael Gove and be responsible for driving forward Labour’s housing policy agenda.
The new role combines the jobs previously done by shadow housing secretary Lucy Powell and communities secretary Steve Reed.
Powell moves to shadow secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport while Reed has been named shadow justice secretary,
Nandy stood in the 2020 Labour leadership election and according to the Labour Committee for Council Housing, backed a pledge to build 100,000 social rent council homes a year. In the 2000s she was shadow cabinet member for housing as a councillor in Hammersmith & Fulham as well as working at homelessness charity Centrepoint.
Nandy has pledged to reconnect Labour with its northern heartlands following the crumbling of the so-called ‘red wall’ in the 2019 general election.
The Labour Party has not yet confirmed the junior ministerial positions, including whether housing minister Mike Amesbury will continue in his post.
