Planning has been granted for 48 new affordable homes at Valley Drive, the second phase of a wider estate regeneration in Gravesend.

Designed for Gravesham borough council by Greenwich-based architect BPTW the scheme (pictured) on the outskirts of Gravesend comprises two residential blocks featuring 16 general-needs flats, plus 32 independent living flats intended for over-55s.

Comprising one-bed flats, all homes in the 32-independent flat block have a dual or triple aspect, with some including an additional study or loft room, while the smaller general needs block is made up of 16 one, two and three-bedroom flats.

Across the scheme, every flat has from private outdoor space and features either its own garden or balcony.

To fit in with nearby residential developments, the U-shaped independent living block features a communal courtyard for outdoor activities, exercise and gardening.

Following extensive community consultation, this enclosed, shared landscaping will offer growing space for fruit trees and kitchen gardens with raised planters as well as more intimate, covered seating opportunities and a lawn, for communal activities for all residents.

Jenny Wallace, cabinet member for housing services at Gravesham Borough council, said: “We are absolutely delighted that planning permission has now been approved for this exciting new project.

“During the next four years under the new Labour administration we hope to be able to deliver more affordable homes in our borough, as well as increase the council housing stock, which will provide much-needed homes for those on the housing need list.”
