£62m package could help continue trend of restoring high street residential activity
A funding package worth £62m could help revitalise high streets across England by converting old buildings into new homes, as well as boosting footfall through schemes to restore shops as well as cultural and community activities.
The money includes £44m of government and Historic England cash to create high street Heritage Action Zones.
Local councils can apply to the scheme which will give them and local community groups access to advice and investment to restore old and unused buildings on high streets across the country.
A spokesperson for Historic England said: “We’ve noticed a welcome increase in the number of properties being converted back into residential use in city centres, for example the Friargate area in Derby, the Greyfriars area in Leicester, and Nottingham city centre, and we hope the High Street Heritage Action Zones will continue this trend.”
Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said the government was “absolutely committed” to seeing high streets thrive, “now and in the future”.
