About 500 homes will be built next to the site of the 2022 Birmingham sports extravaganza
Outline plans for the second phase of the regeneration of Perry Barr have been approved by Birmingham city council, following a public consultation.
Submitted in April, the plans are for between 400 to 500 homes to be built on a 13ha site next to the former Birmingham City university, which is itself currently being redeveloped to form the athletes’ village for the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
Once the Games are over, the athletes’ village will be converted into 1,400 further new homes.
The initial plans for the second phase were put together by a team comprising staff from Arcadis and engineering consultant Phil Jones Associates.
Around 90% of the planned homes on phase two will be houses with two, three, four and five bedrooms. The remainder will be apartments. The site will also feature a new secondary school for 1,300 pupils.
The council said it was too early to say what the housing tenure split would be across the second phase of the scheme.
Birmingham council’s Waheed Nazir said the success of securing an outline planning application “further demonstrates our vision for transforming north-west Birmingham and the ability of the public sector to drive forward major regeneration projects at pace”.
