South Cambridgeshire councillors agree planning adjustments to allow phase of 10,000-home new town to go ahead
Councillors have given outlining planning permisison to plans for 1,000 homes as part of new town Northstowe.
The plans that will go across 47 hectares of land include 400 affordable homes and facilities such as a primary school, shops and open spaces. The affordable homes will be of mixed tenure, including affordable rent, shared ownership and discounted market sale and rent to buy.
Keith Wilderspin, chair of the Swavesey Internal Drainage Board, had raised concerns that there was a potential for the development to cause flood risk to 195 properties in the nearby village of Swavesey.
The lead cabinet member for planning policy Tumi Hawkins at the Liberal Democrat-led council said councillors “recognised the ongoing concerns locally about drainage matters, but having agreed adjustments to the planning conditions, were satisfied that the development should proceed”.
Planning committee members agreed to allow the scheme on the condition tha tthe height of the homes facing onto the B1050 road is reduced.
The development will include a children’s play space, allotments and community orchards.
The Northstowe development will eventually have around 10,000 homes and 4,000 homes, also part of phase three, were given the green light at the start of last month.
