Arup and Fletcher Priest to draw up Folkestone project to run alongside grade II-listed Victorian viaduct
Folkestone & Hythe council has appointed consultants Arup and Fletcher Priest Architects to design a 150-home residential scheme at a former gasworks site in Folkestone.
The designers are to work up detailed low-carbon plans for the site, which has been derelict for nearly 70 years.
The scheme, which is being supported by Homes England, is part of a wider town plan drawn up by urban planning specialists We Made That with extensive contribution from Fletcher Priest.
The site was acquired by the council in 2021 and neighbours the grade II-listed Foord viaduct, a Victorian landmark built in 1848 which dominates Folkestone town centre.
Early plans include the creation of a new car-free green route through the site linking the train station and the harbour.
Homes will include a mix of houses, duplexes and apartments, with the possibility of a small amount of commercial and cultural space, the project team said.
The team is also working with arts charity Creative Folkestone to look at options for incorporating art and creativity into the project.
Arup will lead the technical design team, with Fletcher Priest as architecture and urban design lead.
