A total of 2,204 applications were approved in the third quarter of 2024, compared to 2,343 the previous year. Nearly two-thirds of applications (63%) are for housing.

The number of applications received and decided also both fell by 6% over the same time period.

CIH Northern Ireland in a statement today described the pace of development of new homes as “sluggish”.

Planning application processing times for local applications however improved from 20.4 weeks to 19.2 weeks but remain above the 15-week target.

Justin Cartwright, national director for CIH Northern Ireland said: “The persistent downward trend in planning applications, particularly for residential development, presents a significant challenge to our ability to meet the growing housing need and demand in Northern Ireland.

“While we welcome the slight improvement in processing times, it is crucial that we accelerate efforts to meet statutory targets.

“Ramping up residential development is essential to address the pressing housing requirements and ensure sustainable communities for the future. We must address the issues that are slowing down the process and ensure that we are building the homes that are needed.”
