Justin Cartwright joined the housing institute in 2014
The Chartered Institute of Housing has named Justin Cartwright as its new national director in Northern Ireland.
Cartwright (pictured) joined the CIH six years ago and has been the institute’s Belfast-based policy manager for the past five years.
He replaces Paddy Grey, who had been filling in the role on an interim basis.
CIH chief executive Terrie Alafat said of Cartwight: “He’s done a great job influencing policy, growing our presence in Northern Ireland and promoting professionalism across the sector. I’m sure he’ll continue to be an excellent ambassador for CIH and an outstanding voice for housing.”
Speaking about his appointment Australian-born Cartwright said: “Professionals who work in social housing continue to tell me that their working environment has never been tougher. Next year they will work under the weight of the bedroom tax, which will make it harder for tenants to stay in their homes.
“It’s vital that CIH is there to help [those social housing professionals] in their jobs, given the important role that they play in building sustainable communities across Northern Ireland.”
In July Alafat announced she planned to retire at the end of November this year after four years as the institute’s chief executive.
She will be replaced by Gavin Smart, who became the CIH’s deputy chief executive five years ago.
