Camden Living Housing Association is now a registered provider, meaning it can more easily access government funding and house people off the local authority’s waiting list.

The association was established in 2023 to manage homes built through the council’s community investment programme, which has to date delivered nearly 1,800 homes.

It will initially take over the management of 34 social rent homes in Somers Town.

The housing association is a subsidiary of Camden Living Limited, a company set up by the council which can build homes without having to drawn on Housing Revenue Account borrowing. According to the borough’s housing investment strategy it currently manages 65 homes for intermediate rent, 48 homes for private rent and 34 homes for refugees.

The association has previously said: “Camden Living Housing Association was founded by Camden Council to reduce the increasing strain on the affordable housing market and took action to make sure that more homes could be available at affordable rents within the thriving and diverse community of Camden.”

The council wants to grow Camden Living’s housing stock to up to 1,000 homes, it plans to acquire 500 homes built through the council’s general fund and 200 from section 106 deals in the next five years.

The council’s total community investment programme aims to build 4,850 homes, including 1,800 for social rent, over the next five years.
