Bellway is to build 203 homes – 55 of them affordable – on the site of the former Royal Mail depot in the centre of Chelmsford, Essex.

The housebuilder plans to build a block of apartments ranging between three and five storeys high on the now-derelict site.

The development on Victoria Road will include a landscaped urban square and a small park.

Bellway’s Jenny Walker said the scheme would continue the regeneration of Chelmsford, following the near-completion of its 400-home Marconi Evolution scheme (pictured) in the town.

In a trading statement last month Bellway said turnover was expected to have risen by 12% to nearly £1.5bn in the first six months of the year.

But it warned that operating margins had slipped from 22.2% to 21.5%, “as the benefit of historical house price inflation captured since land acquisition begins to diminish”.

Bellway announces its interim results on 27 March.
