A joint venture between US global investment adviser Angelo Gordon and the UK firm Ridgeback Group has lodged plans for a 364-home build-to-rent development in Sheffield.

The £50m Kangaroo Works proposals are earmarked for a former city-council-owned site at the junction of Rockingham Street and Wellington Street. They were drawn up by Whittam Cox Architects.

Named after a former tool factory that occupied the site in the 19th century, the 15-storey development forms part of Sheffield’s Heart of the City II masterplan.

Angelo Gordon and Ridgeback said the scheme would be built by Henry Boot Construction and managed by city-based Brantingham Homes.

Brantingham Homes director Michael Crooks said great progress had been made with the Heart of the City II masterplan in recent years.

“Kangaroo Works is a key residential site within the scheme and will help support the forthcoming retail and leisure occupiers,” he said.

The scheme will also feature five ground-floor commercial units that Angelo Gordon and Ridgeback said could be put to a variety of uses, from retail to start-up space.

The developers said construction of the project could begin before the end of this year, subject to planning approval.
