50,000-home housing association increases starts 47% year-on-year

Abri said it has built 900 homes in 2023/24, down 11% on its 1,017 figure for the previous year.

The 50,000-home association said it is nevertheless on course to hit its target of building 10,000 homes between 2020 and 2030.

It started work on 999 homes, up by 47% on the 680 it posted for the previous year. The association says it expects to complete 5,347 homes in the next five years, with 3,744 under contract.

Stephen Lodge, executive director of development and strategic asset management at Abri said:

“We have a strong pipeline that will help us meet our commitment to build more than 10,000 homes by 2030. This is all possible thanks to our colleagues and the successful collaborations with our partners.

“The need for affordable and good quality homes has never been more apparent. We’re calling on the next government to commit to a long-term plan for housing so that we can continue working together with our partners to build the homes urgently needed to strengthen communities and support our customers.

Abri said it has spent more than £810m on its 10-year development programme to date and expects to invest £2.4 billion overall. It recently formed a 50:50 joint venture with Vistry Group to build 1,500 homes on the site of Ford Airfield in west Sussex.

Abri in November announced it has entered discussions about a possible deal to take over troubled Octavia. It said in January that the earliest a merger could happen would be October.
