As Michael Gove pledges to abolish leasehold, Geeta Nanda explains measures housing providers can take to make it work in a fairer way
When asked if he wanted to abolish the system of leasehold, Michael Gove recently told The Times, simply, “yes”. But while we await details of what a future system may look like, I think there is more that providers could and should be doing now to give leaseholders a better deal.
Dissatisfaction with leasehold and calls for reform have been growing in recent years. Concerns about ground rents and lease extension costs, coupled with the potential impact of the building safety crisis on some leaseholders, means disenchantment with how leasehold can sometimes work is palpable
