Stonewater has grown its housing stock by around 10,000 properties in just 10 years since it was formed through a merger of Raglan and Jephson. Nick Harris talks about the challenge of maintaining customer service across a large number of rural areas

Housing associations, as we all know, come in many different shapes and sizes. From stock transfer associations with homes concentrated on one geographical area, to national organisations operating at scale, to smaller providers meeting a specific social purpose, the sector is far from “one size fits all”.

But, points out chief executive Nick Harris, Stonewater is still somewhat “unusual” in its geography and history. The landlord operates in  134 local authority areas but is absent from many of England’s biggest cities – and its largest estate consists of just 250 homes.
