Barbara Brownlee talks about her admiration for frontline housing staff dealing with vulnerable people every day, her dislike of tower blocks with little public realm and befriending finance directors
Why did you choose housing as a career?
At university I volunteered for Women’s Aid and realised a need for housing was at the heart of the solution for most of the women who found themselves in the local domestic violence refuge.
I didn’t really understand anything about social housing or councils at that point but did see a lot of women unable to move on with their lives because there was not enough housing for them. A desire to be part of the change is what inspired me to join the housing sector.
What are you most proud of in your career to date?
