Building on the green belt is politically unpopular, but it can bring benefits that brownfield development cannot, argues Craig Pettit
Brownfield development has a critical role to play in the delivery of housing. It ensures that any land that is not actively contributing positively to an area is maximised and made efficient use of. While there are of course costs, both known and unknown, associated with the development of brownfield sites which can affect viability and lead to concessions needing to be made, ostensibly it is development that moves in a positive direction, if not a revolutionary solution. However, it is not going to solve the country’s chronic housing shortfall alone.
