From nutrient neutrality to pressure on local services, new housing developments are unfairly blamed for a lot of problems, argues Paul Smith
Our wetlands are in danger - across the country high levels of nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, are finding their way into protected freshwater habitats. This speeds up the growth of some plants, disturbing the equilibrium of habitats, harming other wildlife and causing the oxygen carrying capacity of the water to fall. In March, Natural England provided what it described as “advice and support” to 42 local planning authorities, offering guidance on addressing the issue.
