The industry must work with the government to counter nimbyism and stimulate recovery
The latest buzzword in public policy is “the new normal”. It is a perfectly valid phrase given the acceptance that things are never going to be the same while we deal with covid-19 and the aftermath once the virus is beaten and we have emerged out of the resultant recession. Inevitably that means changes to public policy including housing.
Government sees the housing industry as helping lead the country out of recession. At the Downing Street briefing on 13th May the housing secretary Robert Jenrick said he was “doing everything I can to help the industry bounce back” on the basis that in “every economic recovery in modern British history the housing market has been key”.
