Ministers must help the social housing sector rebuild financial capacity over the long term

The Budget showed positive signs of intent but social landlords need more than one-off funding boosts. Their approach must include the reintroduction of rent convergence, argues Ian McDermott

Rachel Reeves certainly gave the housing sector a few reasons to be hopeful last week. What we saw from the budget was a commitment from the government to work with us, which is encouraging.

 The budget gave us some of what we’ve long been asking for – additional public investment to help fund social homes and longer-term rent certainty for councils and not-for-profit housing associations.
