Grenfell and the return of regulation: getting the right balance

In the latest in a series of pieces for Housing Today by the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence, Jenny Preece looks at academic writings on regulation in the context of the government’s response to the Grenfell Inquiry

A recent article in Housing Today reports on the government’s response to the Grenfell Inquiry. While there was a cautious welcoming from the construction sector, concerns were expressed about the disruption arising from reform, particularly in relation to the delivery of government ambitions to build 1.5 million homes.

Reforms include a ‘super regulator’ for the construction sector by 2028 and changes to product testing and regulation. This continues the trend of returning to regulation since the Grenfell Tower fire, already evident in other areas such as widening the remit of social housing regulation in relation to ‘consumer’ issues.
