Designers can prevent overheating in new homes, so why do we have a problem?

Green wall

For too long we have lacked legislation to support good design, but the Future Homes Standard offers some hope, says Max Fordham’s Tom McNeil

The way overheating is addressed in housing design requires an overhaul: there needs to be a flexible and simple approach to reviewing designs at an early stage, and then scrutinising what has actually been built.

This issue has been clearly highlighted by the Climate Change Committee (CCC), which identified that policies to address overheating risks in buildings are still missing, despite it being one of the top risks in all UK climate risk assessments published to date. The committee goes on to say that little preventative action is being taken to address health risks from overheating in buildings, and in homes in particular.
