I do love a good election, that regular exercise in democracy when, once every four to five years, politicians are genuinely beholden to us; the general public.
We hold them to account and can genuinely make them sit up and listen. I remember being there for the Portillo moment back in ’97, the incredulity at the snap election in 2019, and last night the inevitable toppling of the Conservatives after 14 years by a resurgent Labour party.
